Disney Interactive reached out to Pattern to play, review and make recommendations on their latest turn-based social network game.

Pattern partnered with the UI/UX team, project management, and Creative Director to improve overall understanding of the game and increase player retention.

KEEP PLAYERS ENGAGED

You only get one chance to make a first impression, but once that moment has passed you need something more meaningful to keep them around and interested. That is true in life and in digital experiences.

Pattern's biggest recommendation was to surface all of the great game modes available to the player. The revised landing screen allowed the player to quickly access their current state in the game, easily switch game modes, and get a preview of what new features would be unlocking as they continued to play.

SMALL THINGS ADD UP

A small cut is something someone can easily ignore, but a thousand can lead to something else all together. As Pattern reviewed the game, we created a list of items that could be improved and helped triage that list against the teams current backlog and sprint goals.

One of the screens that demanded the most attention is where players spend 90% of their time - The Arena. Removing unnecessary HUD elements, creating clarity to the HUD elements that remained, new Auto-Play feature which dramatically decreased player fatigue; added up to a better player experience and longer play sessions.

CREATE ORDER

Unless your product is a 'Create Your Own Story', the order in which you present information can be just as important as the information itself. 

A simple pass of the content hierarchy can make a big difference in clearly communicating to the player what to do next and making sure they continue down your user funnel.
